I grew up in arguably one of the busiest places in the world, Silicon Valley, California. It has a reputation of producing some of the world’s greatest minds, and a nonstop grind for success. But in order for you to better understand my story, I want to tell you about the family I come from. My great great grandfather had 12 children, he came through ellis island before moving west. The majority of family stayed in Denver, Colorado. They were bricklayers at the time, and then car salesmen. My father’s parents met in first grade. Grandma spent a lot of time alongside my great aunt Ruth, who would go on to create the Barbie doll after watching her daughter Barbra play with a paper doll she deemed was too lifeless. My Grandfather would get a job at Matel after serving as a Seabee, building runways in the Pacific, and then working in Los Angeles building sets for movies like Robin William’s, Hook. At Matel, he built models, out of balsa wood, incorporated motors, servos, and vinyl wrapping that brought the planes, boats and cars to life. Then working as a salesmen traveling and advertising for Matel, which was owned by Ruth Handler Mosko, and Elliot Handler the inventor of what I like to consider the boys Barbie at the time, the Hot Wheel. My Grandmother went on to pursue a life of music, working as a piano teacher, and bass fiddle master for Beach City Symphony in Los Angeles. My Grandfather turned his love for plane models into a hobby shop, starting clubs, and even an airstrip for remote controlled planes, which he remained an avid builder and flyer before his stroke in the 90’s. I was born in 2002, a few months after Great Aunt Ruth’s passing. I got to know my grandpa, or at least a fraction of him before his passing when I was 6, but out of my two older brothers I was the only one to take a real interest in flying. Later getting to rebuild one of his old models and retro fit it with new, electric components, I was able to take my Grandma to the field and fly the same plane my Grandpa once flew in front of her.
